Lubumbashi’s slag hill

STL treats a part of the Lubumbashi slag heap using pyrometallurgy. It produces a white alloy in the form of granules. Its annual production capacity is around 5,500 tonnes of cobalt and 3,500 tonnes of copper. In addition to its alloy production, STL also produces, through the treatment of gas from its electric furnace, more than 22,000 tons of zinc oxide per year in the form of granules and/or powder.

STL obtains the slag from the Lubumbashi slag heap through the commercial company GTL which acquires it from GÉCAMINES SARL, the owner of the slag heap. STL is in charge of the day-to-day management and operation of the metallurgical process as well as all the technical issues relating to it.

At the inauguration of STL in November 2000, the electric furnace of a diameter of 17 metres and maximum power of 36 megawatts, was the largest in the world. It remains today one of the largest furnaces in the world for this type of metallurgy.

The metallurgical process used by STL is a pyrometallurgical process, consisting of a carbothermal reduction of the metal oxides contained in the slag.

Reflecting the way it treats its gases, the economical use of water in a closed circuit makes STL a clean company, respectful of strict environmental standards, comparable to those that apply in Europe.

Besides its industrial activities, STL develops activities for the benefit of the urban community of Lubumbashi.
In particular, the company supports educational, social and humanitarian associations, infrastructure projects and sporting events. STL also supports the FONDATION RACHEL FORREST.

Using state-of-the-art technology, STL uses pyrometallurgy to exploit the Lubumbashi’s slag hill, originating from a previous pyrometallurgy activity by the Union Minière and the Gécamines.
